Software bestimmt, was ein softwaregesteuertes Gerät tut und wie es das tut (in etwa vergleichbar mit einem Manuskript). Die Hardware (das Gerät selbst) führt Software aus (arbeitet sie ab) und setzt sie so in die Tat um. Software ist die Gesamtheit von Informationen, die man der Hardware hinzufügen muss, damit ein softwaregesteuertes Gerät für ein definiertes Aufgabenspektrum nutzbar wird.

5.25″ Diskettenlocher
Ein Diskettenlocher ist eine kleine Apparatur, die in den Rand einer 5¼-Zoll-Diskette eine rechteckige Kerbe stanzt. Das war nötig, um bei einigen Homecomputern wie zum Beispiel dem Commodore 64, wessen übliche Diskettenlaufwerke mit nur einem Schreib-Lesekopf für die Unterseite ausgerüstet waren, die zweite Seite zusätzlich nutzen zu können.
